Ep. 71: A Decade of Copywriting – Jay’s Story

Nicki Krawczyk, founder of Filthy Rich Writer and the Build Your Copywriting Business podcast

In honor of Filthy Rich Writer’s 10-year anniversary, we’re celebrating throughout 2022 and wanted to touch base with some of the earliest copywriting students Nicki worked with and trained. On today’s episode of the Build Your Copywriting Business Podcast, Nicki and Kate are catching up with Jason Schneider, a copywriter with a decade of experience writing for a variety of brands, including Jetsetter, Thrillist, Getty Images, and more.

Jay talks about using both sides of the brain, balancing both creativity and strategy, as well as why he prefers working as an on-staff copywriter as opposed to going full-time freelance (though he also does take on freelance projects!). If you’re curious to hear what a copywriting career can look like 10 years in, you’ll want to hear Jay’s story!

A Sneak Peek at the Episode

[1:53] Nicki and Kate are joined by a former colleague, and technically one of the first Comprehensive Copywriting Academy students, Jay Schneider. Jay explains how he first started working with Nicki and Kate 10 years ago.

[2:58] Nicki describes what Jay did during the interview process that made him stand out and influenced her decision to hire him.

[5:45] As you know, there are plenty of reasons to love and get into copywriting. Jay describes what aspects stood out to him and attracted him to join the industry in the first place.

[9:35] Jay notes that while the opportunity to use his creativity in writing has led him throughout his career, copywriting also has an enjoyable execution side to it that is often overlooked.

[13:13] Nicki asks Jay to talk about how his career progressed and the group talk about a few of his stops throughout that progression.

[19:42] While talking about his career progression, Nicki points out how Jay is a great example of the fact that companies will always have a need for skilled copywriters–regardless of any current industry trends.

[23:42] Nicki asks Jay to share his best advice and guidance for copywriters who are brand new to the industry and trying to launch their careers.

[28:42] Nicki explains that there has been an evolution in the level of awareness that companies have of their need for copywriters. Companies now understand the value of copywriting better than ever before.

[32:27] Kate encourages Jay to talk about what he has learned to look for in a role based on his diverse experience. Jay describes one of his key points to look for is a chance to fulfill a true need for a business.

[42:47] Jay dives into the fact that a lot of his business as a copywriter is from companies that he used to work on staff for. Jay is a great example of how important it is to make sure your work reflects your expertise and the benefit of keeping relationships with anyone you work with.

[52:03] Jay notes that Nicki told him early in his career, when she was his supervisor, to build his portfolio website and encouraged him and others to freelance. Jay credits part of his success to the fact that he followed this advice from the beginning. His website can be found in the related links below.
