At the beginning of your career, you may think that all you want to do is become a freelance copywriter. And that’s great! But, it’s also important to stay open to different directions that your copywriting career could take you.
In today’s episode, Nicki and Kate share examples of some of the various paths your career might follow and offer advice on how progress your career along the way.

[1:52] You may be a freelance copywriter (full time or part time). You may be an on staff copywriter. Copywriters can work in many different capacities and industries.
[3:35] Some copywriters work at an external agency, an ad or marketing agency, where they do creative work for other companies. You could also be a contract copywriter in any capacity.
[8:00] There is also the option of becoming an “ACD”, associate creative director, which is equivalent to a copy manager.
[9:30] Nicki has worked as a copy manager and found it very fulfilling to help other copywriters develop their skills and grow as professionals.
[13:00] There is also the role of a creative director, which often has some design background, but have worked with many different clients and have a better idea of what might work best. They are really enforcing the creative brief.
[14:50] If you are a freelance copywriter and want to stay freelance you may want to grow your team and start an agency. You can also bring on some designers and create a marketing agency. You get to shape what you want this to be.
[16:30] If you love writing copy for social media you could also become a social media manager. It includes writing copy and developing the social strategy for companies.
[17:55] The beauty of this career is that you can always go back to freelance copywriting, no matter what job title path you have followed.
