Why is it that we can write copy for our clients with little fuss, but when it comes to writing for ourselves we kick and scream? The biggest reason copywriters struggle to write copy for themselves is that they don’t treat their own copywriting projects like a copy project.
But it’s one of your most important copywriting projects you’ll ever do. Your portfolio needs to reflect your ability to write great copy. Otherwise, there’s a good chance clients won’t want to work with you! Nicki and Kate are digging into two keytactics you need to use that will help you write a stronger portfolio that makes clients want to work with you.

A Sneak Peek at the Episode
[1:15] As a professional copywriter you need a website, it’s non negotiable. You can start pitching before you have one but you absolutely need to be working on it, without it you won’t be taken seriously.
[2:25] Remember that this is a copy project, just like all your other copy projects.
[4:45] Each section of your website should have a purpose, and doing a creative brief for each part can help make that happen. Don’t let a template drive your copy, even if it seems easier.
[9:20] While you are building your portfolio you can make a list of your skills and qualifications, everything you’ve done, to remind yourself of your benefit to your clients.
[11:45] When creating your brand voice try not to consider what you think other people want you to sound like, be authentic to how you want to present yourself.
[14:00] Done is better than perfect, you can change and adjust as you learn more and work with clients.
[17:00] You don’t have to educate your potential clients on what copywriting is. Instead, educate them on what your benefit to them is, make it clear across your site.
[22:40] When you know what you are trying to write, instead of just writing to fill your space, you are going to come up with a much better project. DO A CREATIVE BRIEF!
