You wake up in the morning, excited to start the day … then remember you have to go to work.

Burnout: we’ve all been there. For Leslie, it turned out she still enjoyed being an attorney—just not full time. But, like all of us, there are still bills to pay.
On this episode of the Build Your Copywriting Business podcast, Leslie is sharing how— instead of completely leaving her career as an attorney behind—she added copywriting as a source of income.
Now, Leslie is a part-time attorney and a part-time copywriter, giving her the best of both worlds (minus any of the burnout).
Whether you’re still considering to go all-in on copywriting or you’ve already committed to working as a copywriter, Leslie’s story has a ton of inspiration on how you can rethink your career to make it exactly what you want.

A Sneak Peek at the Episode
[06:57] I think I felt stuck being an attorney. what else was out there or nothing just felt right. I do like to write and I feel like I’m pretty good at it but what is out there? So I kept looking and then I came across your video and rest is history. It sounded amazing. And so I bought the course and signed up, started taking the classes.
[11:39] I write a lot but this is not the kind of writing I do. This is a whole different. It’s similar but different techniques, different goals, different skillset. It took me three years to become an attorney. So I figure when I started the course and doing the assignments, like it was gonna take me some time. I was fine with that. I’m gonna enjoy it for sure.
[12:35] I’m gonna take the steps and I’m gonna get there. And even if it’s 15, 30 minutes a day, whatever, I’m gonna move closer to my goal. I think you see a lot of success stories and some people it comes quicker than others.
[13:10] I guess my advice would just be, remember why you went into it, why you bought the course, what were those emotions? What was driving you? Because there was an important reason. And if it was that important, it’s important to put in the work and put in the time to do it.
[14:36] It’s still surreal to me to be, oh yeah, I have a copywriting career. I’m a copywriter. This is for someone who just felt stuck for so long, that’s such an amazing feeling.
[18:03] It’s just a varied amount of work. It’s a lot of different things that they need me to do and a lot of different clients. One day I could be working on a dog trainer, clients, sales emails, marketing emails. And then the next day I’m working for a nonprofit that’s arts integration nonprofit. It’s so different and it’s so interesting. It’s so challenging and I love that.
[20:17] It is such a relief having being able to do something else ’cause litigation in general, whether it’s family law or something else, it’s so draining. And so for me, I feel so much lighter being able to work on things. I feel excited about working on other things.
[24:10] I had so much anxiety and nausea in my stomach those first couple weeks after I was making the switch and going from like full-time to part-time, it’s worth it. I think it’s the idea of anything that’s worth it, to continue growing, you’re gonna have to be uncomfortable. You’re gonna have to be scared.
[25:50] It isn’t all or nothing if you don’t want it to be, if you enjoy what you did before, but if for whatever reason, it’s not working or it’s not paying enough money or it’s draining, maybe make it work a different way. It doesn’t have to be like one or the other.
Must-Hear Takeaways
As with every episode, we highly encourage you to listen to the entire conversation! But here are a few of the highlights:
” It can be kind of overwhelming. Sometimes it takes some time to do a little bit of looking around, a little bit of exploration. And honestly too, that exploration can be kind of overwhelming.” – Nicki
” I guess my advice would be sort of dream with your eyes wide open. Work for those dreams. Put in the time, make it happen, but also know that it’s not gonna happen overnight and have a plan for it.” – Leslie
” I have so many more options now, with family life because I can set my own schedule. And that’s not to say I’m not busy. I’m really busy and there are nights where I have to take off time during the day. I love being able to set my schedule and being able to walk away if I need to. I could never have done that before.” – Leslie
” Certainly keeps things fresh, not just variety with copywriting, also variety between two very different careers. Very cool.” – Nicki
” This right now is uncomfortable but all of these things that we do, they expand our lives and make it better if we just are willing to just, eh, get out of that comfort zone.” – Nicki
” There’s a reason why you’re interested. What got you there? Is it worth pursuing? It’s probably worth pursuing. It doesn’t hurt to sign up for the course, and you will get the money back if you decide to move forward.”
“I think it’s worth it to have options and to investigate and to research if you’re unhappy. And if you came across the course, don’t just move on. Look into it, take a chance, be uncomfortable,”- Leslie
