Episode 265: Seeing Her Copy in Times Square – Alex’s Story

By Nicki Krawczyk

I hope you’re ready for the WEALTH of information Alex is sharing.

On this episode of the Build Your Copywriting Business podcast, we are beyond lucky that CCA student, former account manager, and current copywriting dynamo Alex is sharing her wisdom from BOTH sides of the agency aisle.

On the account side, Alex managed timelines, scopes, and client relationships.

And, lucky us, she’s sharing pro tips for how you can better manage your own timelines, scopes, and relationships to wow clients (and keep your sanity!).

As someone who was on one career trajectory for well over a decade, Alex is also sharing what it was like to make a major career pivot into copywriting and how she did it.

And, yes, she got to see copy for one of her projects in the bright lights of Times Square. How cool is that?!

A Sneak Peek at the Episode

[02:30] I grew up inside advertising agencies, managing timelines, scopes, and client relationships. When COVID hit, I kept being asked if I wanted to climb higher, and my gut reaction was always a very clear “no.” That forced me to ask myself what I actually wanted to spend the next few decades doing.

[03:30] I realized the part of my job I loved most was sitting with creatives and being close to the ideas.  When COVID happened, I was just if I don’t do it now, then I’m never gonna do it. Everything felt uncertain anyway, so I decided to finally bet on myself.

[04:51] Before CCA, I explored expensive portfolio programs, but I didn’t have the time or money to walk away from full-time work. I also didn’t believe anyone needed those programs to succeed. I wanted something flexible, practical, and taught by people who actually knew the industry.

[08:36] I admit I used to think I’d missed my chance because I didn’t start as a junior creative with a fancy degree.  I’m 30 and it’s too late, which sounds so ridiculous because  I don’t think it’s ever too late to change direction.

[09:48] I enrolled in CCA, built a spec portfolio, and made a strategic move to take a part-time account role while using the other 50% of my time to build my copywriting business. I was upfront with agencies about my plan.

[10:35] I started telling people, selectively and safely, that I was becoming a copywriter. That alone led to feedback, encouragement, and small paid opportunities. One conversation turned into another, and suddenly momentum was building.

[17:31] Seeing my work in Times Square, a place I first stood in at 16, dreaming. Years later, I returned and looked up at the same tower, realizing I had written the campaign now running there. It wasn’t fashion like I once imagined but it was mine.

[21:28] There are so many benefits to being able to work from home and the flexibility of being independent. Office life can be fun, but deep creative work requires space and solitude. For me, independence fuels better work.

[29:10] Clients often ask for execution when what they really need is strategy. My job is to listen deeply, ask better questions, and guide them toward the foundations that will actually support long-term success. Organization and clarity protect everyone involved.

[36:45] The difference between being a producer who executes and a partner who understands the full scope. Clients return when they trust you as a collaborator, not just a deliverable machine.

[40:27] A rebrand project where the client doubled revenue after launch. While it wasn’t just my work, I could clearly see how strong messaging contributed to growth.  You can see the impact and it really affect how people respond to it.

Must-Hear Takeaways

As with every episode, we highly encourage you to listen to the entire conversation! But here are a few of the highlights:

“I wanted something flexible but really informative—something that let me learn from talented people and meet others on the same path.” – Alex

“Literally just saying it out loud planted the seed.” – Alex

“’ You never know where projects are going to come from. Saying what you do has virtually no downside. Say it to people who have the potential to be connected to other people.” – Nicki

“Clients ask for one thing when they really need another.” – Alex

“ What we are writing  has the capacity to dramatically change someone’s business.” – Alex
