Ep. 119: From Copywriter to Managing a Team of Copywriters in Less Than 2 Years – Jenni’s Story

By Nicki Krawczyk

When Jenni joined the Comprehensive Copywriting Academy in April 2021, she was working in a marketing role. Writing was part of her day-to-day work, but, like most CCA students, she didn’t know what copywriting was, much less that it was an entire career! Before she even finished the course, she was landing her first clients. Spoiler: in less than two years, she was managing a team of freelance copywriters and more than doubled her income.

On this episode, Jenni shares a ton of valuable advice for copywriters looking to level up their own game, including the importance of your portfolio and how to calm your nerves when receiving feedback.

A Sneak Peek at the Episode

[1:00] Jenni is a CCA student with an interesting journey in copywriting and how quickly she has found success in her career.

[3:00] When the pandemic hit in 2020 Jenni needed a reset in her career. She had big marketing ideas that didn’t fit her current career and then came across an ad for the CCA.

[5:30] After flying through the course material and starting to pitch local businesses Jenni applied for a job with a company that felt like it would be the perfect fit, even though she had every intention of staying freelance.

[6:50] Jenni is now working as a marketing manager and the lead copywriter, managing other copywriters and using all of her skills to do what she loves.

[9:00] Jenni credits her success to her personality and drive to be successful in anything she sets her mind too. There isn’t a magic wand, she gives credit to hard work and the CCA.

[13:20] Jenni advises CCA to remember that their website is important, she uses it when hiring copywriters and finds it a reflection on the copywriter. Take advantage of the coaching calls and submit everything you can!

[18:30] Jenni has always loved writing and even won writing contests in middle school. After losing that path she is thrilled that she has found her way back to writing and has made a very successful career out of it.

[22:30] Good editing is part of the process of good writing, so feedback should not be taken personally.

[27:20] As a writer Jenni has learned that after receiving harsh feedback from a boss or client it can be very healthy to walk away for a bit and not let her emotions get involved with the editing.

Must-Hear Takeaways

As with every episode, we highly encourage you listen to the entire conversation! But, here are a few of the highlights:

Headshot of Comprehensive Copywriting Academy student, Jenni, who went from freelance copywriter to managing a team of freelance copywriters in less than 2 years.

“The key thing for me [that CCA gave me]—all the skills all of that was wonderful—but what it really did was it gave me confidence. Like, ok, I can do this. I am good at it. And this is super valuable to people. So, that was really what I needed to step out and apply for those high-dollar freelance positions.” – Jenni

“Remember when someone gives you feedback, it might not be about you. It might be about them and they’re very busy. Or they just haven’t learned how to give feedback in the most constructive way. Give yourself a beat to remember that ‘this may not be about me or my writing.'” – Jenni

“Don’t be afraid to invest in yourself … This can truly change your life. This can change what you make. This can change your confidence level and understanding you have those skills. Or maybe just giving you a starting point to know I am going to start here and this is how I am going to get there and this is a roadmap that I have. Just don’t count yourself out. Sometimes you need a little help to level up.”
