Ep. 88: 10 Unnecessary Copywriting Stressors

By Nicki Krawczyk

In this episode, Nicki and Kate are digging into some common worries that all copywriters (especially new ones) run into. They discuss the top 10 stressors that aren’t necessary to your success and why you don’t actually need to worry about them!

Fortunately, most of the common stressors are based on misconceptions around copywriting; they are based around things that we think, not things that are actually true. Dive into this episode so you can grow your copywriting career without any unnecessary stress from myths in the industry.

A Sneak Peek at the Episode

[0:53] Our hosts introduce the topic of common, but unnecessary worries for copywriters. Not only will the hosts touch on these stressors but they will also share guidance on how to overcome them.

[2:17] The first common worry is that your client will want you to have a copywriting certificate. This is not an issue to be concerned with because your clients will know that a copywriting certificate means nothing; what matters is that you can write great copy. Our hosts remind us that copywriting is only based on your ability to write copy, not your background, experience, etc.

[6:27] The next common concern among copywriters is that there will be too many copywriters. Fortunately, this is not true! Nicki explains that when you first dive into copywriting, it can seem this way because you’re so focused on the industry, but in reality there aren’t enough copywriters for the number of businesses in the world!

[13:44] Another misconception that causes stress to copywriters is that AI is taking over copywriting. Rest assured, AI will never be able to identify the deep benefit to consumers or be able to truly empathize on an emotional level with consumers. Nicki shares that AI can build sentences and writing based on formulas and algorithms, but they are not capable of actually creating anything.

[18:02] Many new copywriters think that being clever or funny is equivalent to being creative and can feel pressure to always be funny or clever. Kate illustrates that the good news is you don’t always need to be funny in your writing (sometimes it’s not even effective) but you just need to be able to get the correct message to the consumer efficiently.

[21:22] Another copywriting task that causes stress is the initial discovery call with a client. It’s easy to build this meeting up in our heads to be more than it is, when in reality it’s just a simple conversation with another human being. Nicki mentions that you just need to be yourself and come ready with questions that will help you better understand the client’s business and their goals for the project at hand.

[27:29] The next common question of concern copywriters have is: what if a client asks me if I have experience in something that I’ve never done before? Nicki explains how you can answer this question honestly but then bring up something else that you have done that’s similar to what the client is looking for. This will show that you think things through and understand the fundamentals of copywriting.

[31:32] Kate introduces the final common stressor for copywriters is that they don’t have the “years of experience” that clients say they are looking for. Nicki explains that the listings are actually more like a wish list than they are a list of requirements. She states that most clients will look past a lack of experience once they see that you are an expert in copywriting.

[36:26] Nicki closes the episode with the reminder that these common worries are totally natural, and it’s fine to feel them along the way. But, you do need to take action and focus you energy on things that will move your career forward which will help you overcome the emotions surrounding these stressors.
