Ep. 65: Combatting Work/Life Balance Guilt as a Copywriter

By Nicki Krawczyk

When you work from home, it can be very hard to have work-life balance. And, if you’re like Nicki and Kate, you may even feel guilty when you’re not spending time on your business!

On this episode of the Build Your Copywriting Business podcast, Nicki and Kate are digging into ways that they have tried to find separation between work and life. Inevitably, your life may sneak into your work (for example, if you have a child, perhaps you’re taking a client call with your child on your lap). But having set time for “life” and not letting work sneak into it, is crucial. Here’s how they’re taking steps to work on it!

A Sneak Peek at the Episode

[1:45] While it takes a lot of effort and must be intentional, our hosts both agree that it is SO IMPORTANT to have separation between work and personal life. This is exceptionally hard when starting your own business.

[3:00] It is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain the balance when working from home, something many of us have transitioned to in the past two years.

[4:30] The guilt of relaxing can be counter productive, and as Kate explains, prevents her from using her down time to effectively recharge

[6:30] Be wary of what you see online! It’s common to come across images and influencers who seem to have a perfect work and life balance, but that may be a fallacy.

[10:00] You need to advocate for yourself, and take care of yourself, accept your value and how important the roles you play are. And to take care of yourself you need to make sure you sign off from work and have time blocked for self care and relaxation.

[14:00] Nicki and Kate reflect on a previous interview with Dorothy and her metaphor about spoons in a drawer, in relation to the amount of energy we have in a day. Dorothy has previously been a guest on the BYCB podcast and also presented for the Freelance Summit (CCA students – check your dashboard!).

[21:00] Guilt or not, Nicki implores that you need to be true to what you need, both when working with clients and taking care of yourself.

[24:00] You can’t let yourself get so worn down that can’t you provide the work you are tasked with. If you don’t take that time off you will burn out and become incapable of doing your job!

[25:00] Nicki addresses the importance of “white space” (space for your brain to not do anything ) and daily rituals! Getting to the point of boredom is ok, and important for your creativity.
