Ep. 83: From Freelancer to On Staff Copywriter – Christina’s Story

By Nicki Krawczyk

Meet Christina, a Comprehensive Copywriting Academy student, and public school teacher turned copywriter extraordinaire. When Christina left teaching, she knew that her next career needed to be doing something she loved, but still flexible enough to fit the needs of her family picture. Then, she found the CCA and used it to turn her skills into a successful copywriting career that works for her.

In this episode, Christina talks to Nicki and Kate about why she got into copywriting in the first place, how it fits her career needs perfectly, and what she loves the most about being an on-staff copywriter.

A Sneak Peek at the Episode

[1:00] Nicki and Kate welcome today’s guest, Christina, and asks her to explain exactly what made her decide to get into copywriting and leave her role as a public school teacher. Christina goes on to explain that her family needs and her passion for writing were huge motivating factors in why she chose copywriting for her new career.

[6:30] Christina mentions that she loves copywriting because she gets to be on the side of marketing that is trying to help people. She notes that she chose the Comprehensive Copywriting Academy because she knew that it was focused on adding value to people’s lives through copywriting.

[7:15] Christina actually wanted to be a freelance copywriter, not an on-staff copywriter. However, she speaks to events that happened that shifted her mindset and opened her mind to other opportunities. She actually ended up getting hired on staff by her first-ever client later down the road!

[14:32] Christina sheds light to the fact that it was easy to make the decision to take the on-staff role because she knew if it didn’t work out she had a built in safety net through her ability to freelance. One of the best parts about copywriting is one you learn the fundamentals you will always have freelancing to help you earn an income, no matter what.

[16:00] Christina mentions that one of the skills that has really helped her to this point is her ability to take feedback graciously and make necessary changes to improve her copy. She encourages copywriters to accept feedback, and be willing to use that feedback to make changes, even if you love what you wrote originally.

[19:02] As mentioned before, Christina chose to become a copywriter because she needed flexibility for her family. She explains how this role has allowed her to spend more time with her family. Christina also talks about finding effective ways to work from home and how to be the most efficient with the time that she has.

[21:42] Kate asks Christina if she is taking freelance projects at this moment, and Christina responds by explaining that she is totally capped out with her on-staff role. But, she notes that as her kids grow older she plans on taking on more work in her current on-staff position.

[26:30] Christina offers this piece of advice to anyone trying to break through in copywriting: remember that clients have a lot of pressure on them as business owners, so you need to remember to treat them with kindness and understanding even during tough situations. Communication is key to a smooth and successful creative process.

[29:17] Our hosts thank Christina for joining the show and close the episode with important takeaways from Christina’s story.
