A Sneak Peek at the Episode
[0:37] Nicki introduces today’s guest and Comprehensive Copywriting Academy Student, Mike Lamb. Mike has had a run of exciting wins and found success quickly after joining the CCA.
[1:40] Mike explains how he found out about copywriting and what led him to decide to pursue it as a career. Before he was a copywriter, Mike was a compliance officer in the finance industry.
[5:44] After applying for a couple of positions after working through the CCA, Mike was able to land a senior copywriter position. He explains how he used a unique process for applying for the position that set him apart from the other candidates.
[9:22] Mike explains that he wasn’t concerned with his lack of experience when applying to roles. He knew that the most important part of being a copywriter is being able to write great copy, not the years of experience you may or may not have.
[12:00] Mike tells Nicki and Kate that he was open to any path that copywriting might take him, and he originally thought freelance would be the path he followed. However, it turns out that working on-staff was the path that best suited Mike’s needs.
[14:57] Sometimes copywriters overlook all of the benefits there are to working on-staff, as Nicki reminds us. It’s important not to rule out any type of position before you try it because each copywriting role has unique pros and cons. It’s all about finding what works best for you.
[19:12] Mike speaks to the return on investment he made with the CCA: for every dollar he spent on the CCA, he made $100! He speaks to how the value of the CCA is one that continues to grow throughout your career.
[23:10] Mike dives into all of the opportunities that he sees for copywriters in the world today. He gives Shopify sites, Airbnb listings, and real estate agencies as an example.
[30:07] Mike advises other copywriters to thoroughly research companies that they are interested in working with. He says that the more you understand about a business the easier it is to show them that you can help their business.
[33:07] Mike makes one last point to encourage others to start pitching clients or applying for roles as soon as they feel ready! He adds that even if you’re just starting out, you’re ready as long as you understand the fundamentals of copywriting.
