A Sneak Peek at the Episode
[1:13] Although the term “imposter syndrome” has increased in popularity over recent years, its meaning can be tricky to pin down. Kate gives examples of situations where imposter syndrome commonly arises and the emotions you might be feeling while experiencing it.
[2:12] The first tip our hosts have for combatting imposter syndrome is to find a way to remove your feelings from the situation. Looking at things objectively can go a long way in helping you overcome frightening emotions.
[6:24] Nicki reminds us that real facts don’t have emotions attached to them. If you are feeling negative emotions, acknowledge them, and remove them from the situation until you get down to the objective truth.
[8:12] As a copywriter you are more than aware of how powerful language can be. So why don’t you apply that to yourself? Nicki and Kate describe how changing your language can help you change your narrative when you start to feel like you aren’t good enough.
[15:12] Kate advises to always make sure a task or project will benefit your business before you start it; it’s easy to waste time doing what you think you “should” be doing based on the feelings associated with imposter syndrome.
[16:40] The final tip from our hosts on avoiding imposter syndrome is to start learning from your peers instead of comparing yourself to them. Someone very, very smart once said, “comparison is the thief of joy” and that certainly applies to copywriting.
[21:38] Kate points out that when looking at other copywriters’ careers you most often only hear about their wins. Just because you don’t hear about how others struggle throughout their journey doesn’t mean that they don’t struggle at all; everyone struggles in their career at some point.
[24:42] Nicki and Kate discuss how in our lives there are a lot of things that we “couldn’t” do that we now can complete with ease. Once you have learned how to write copy, you are capable of finding success through copywriting.
[27:12] Nicki leaves us with the thought that the bright side of imposter syndrome is that it means you genuinely care about your work. This means that once you remove the emotions and fear that fuels imposter syndrome, you will be able to find success in your career.
