A unique selling point or unique selling proposition (USP) tells your prospective clients why they should hire you versus any other copywriter. What do you have that no other copywriter brings to the table? If you’re instinct is to say, “Nothing! There’s nothing unique about me!”, then you’ll want to listen in.
Whether you’re just starting out or you’ve been copywriting for awhile, it’s time to either write or revisit your USP. Nicki and Kate are breaking down how to write a compelling USP that will make it crystal clear to your prospective clients why you’re the best copywriter for the job.

A Sneak Peek at the Episode
[2:25] USP is your unique selling point, it tells your potential client what you bring to the table that sets you apart from other clients. And the good news is that not a lot of copywriters use them, so this can really up your game!
[6:00] As you work on your USP and make a list of experiences to consider including, don’t discount things because you think someone else has done it so it’s not unique. Your insights and takeaways from those experiences are really what is important.
[9:45] Make sure you follow all three steps in the process of creating your USP! One experience, that created one trait, equals what makes you uniquely skilled as a copywriter.
[14:24] Don’t try to make the USP do something that it’s not designed to do. It’s just to give your client one simple little hook that sets you apart from the competition and gives them a reason to keep reading and contact you.
[18:09] Keep it simple!
[22:15] Writing for yourself is some of the hardest writing you will do, it’s okay if you need to walk away, but DO NOT SKIP THIS!
Must-Hear Takeaways
As with every episode, we highly encourage you listen to the entire conversation! But, here are a few of the highlights:
“That’s the first panic people for people who are newer to copywriting or even a year or two in , they go, “*gasp!*, but there isn’t anything unique about me as a copywriter.” But there is.” – Nicki
“Everything that we are today in our personalities, our skills, all of that is due to who we’ve been in the past—things we’ve experience in the past, things that we’ve gone through, things that have helped us grow. And that’s part of what makes you unique as an individual. And, so, that’s also what makes you unique as a copywriter.” – Nicki
“[The USP] is not about you. [It’s] about how we can add value to our clients. Yes, it’s about what we’ve done, but the point of having someone wanting to hir you and work with you is because they can see that you’re focus is on their business and what value you can bring to them. Not, ‘I want a job!'” -Kate
