A Sneak Peek at the Episode
[1:17] Ch’ien is welcomed to the show by Nicki and Kate. He briefly mentions all of the cities he has worked in and shares some of the companies that he has worked for.
[2:38] Ch’ien notes that working with Nicki and Kate at Trip Advisor/Smarter Travel helped introduce him to working with copy from a design perspective. He explains that the lessons he learned working with our hosts helped him continue to do similar work in future positions.
[3:49] Ch’ien admits that copy is not his strongest trait, so he has surrounded himself with managers who are very capable of evaluating and writing copy that works well with the creative strategy as a whole. He also goes on to say that he worked with a lot of impressive copywriters who went on to become creative directors, so it’s not just designers who can become creative directors.
[5:27] The collaboration between designers and copywriters shouldn’t always be led by one or the other. As Ch’ien mentions, there are certain times when designers should take the lead and other times when copywriters should. Because of this, you need to be comfortable doing both to set yourself up for success.
[8:33] Kate asks Ch’ien what traits standout in successful copywriters who have became creative directors. Ch’ien says that it is critical to be an amazing storyteller. He elaborates by saying that every conversation is a chance to intrigue the listener with great storytelling.
[10:22] Ch’ien points out that whether you aspire to be a creative director or not, it is key that you understand what tone to use at each specific point of your journey. You also need to be able to easily identify exactly who your audience is.
[14:59] It’s important to keep in mind that creative directors haven’t mastered both design and copywriting, but they know how to efficiently give creative direction to both designers and copywriters. The best creative directors, copywriters, and designers all are focused on sending the correct message to their audience.
