How to Use Online Quizzes to Get Consistent Freelance Work

By Kate Sitarz Leave a Comment

Nicki sits on a black leather couch wearing a bright orange top and jeans with a laptop on her lap and a bookshelf in the backdrop.

The best way to land copywriting clients and consistent freelance work is pitching. You are most in control of your career—your income, who you work with, your projects—when you are in control.

But what if you could also attract clients

The Fastest, Easiest Lead Magnet

Once you have a few copywriting clients and are consistently landing work, you may start to consider building your business further.

One of the ways to do that is to create a lead magnet. A lead magnet is a free offer—a downloadable guide or a 15-minute homepage audit, for example—that you give away in exchange for someone’s contact details. For most copywriters, this is simply an email address.

Building your email list is one of the best long-term strategies for your business. It allows you to directly connect with all your past, present, and potential clients at once. And, done well, email communications can (and should!) feel personalized and relevant to each person on your list.

This helps build trust and more meaningful relationships, giving yourself more opportunities for more and more work.

But back to the lead magnet itself. How do you get them on the list in the first place?

Too many copywriters get stuck on creating the lead magnet. They want to create a 50-page guide, start playing around in Canva, and then realize after a month they haven’t actually created their lead magnet.

An online quiz is a much easier—and more effective—way to generate leads.

Create a quiz in minutes, not days

First, you can create a quiz within minutes. You don’t need to spend days like you would putting together an ebook or guide.

You can quite literally create a quiz in minutes (more on that in a second!).

Generate more engagement

That guide you spent days putting together: how many people will actually read it all? And is it tailored to your audience—everyone in your audience?

With a quiz, it’s more likely someone will get through from start to finish (when people can see their progress, it compels them to complete the quiz). It’s interactive and makes it feel like the experience is tailored to them—because it is.

Plus, you’re also able to tailor the results based on your potential customer’s answers. Maybe one client would benefit from a homepage evaluation checklist while another would benefit from a 15-minute homepage audit. Based on their quiz answers, you can send them to the right place and give them the right next step.

Tailor your follow-up

Once potential clients answer your quiz, you can now segment your follow up based on their specific answers.

Think of the quiz as the “pre-pitch” step. You now have pointed information about your potential client and their needs. So, not only can you send a value-packed pitch (like you would even if you didn’t have insider info!), but now you can tailor that value-packed pitch to be something you know they’re focused on and interested in.

Using a Quiz to Generate Leads

So, creating an online quiz is fast and easy. But what do you put in the quiz to generate leads?

The answer is based on what information you want to get from prospective clients—and what’s going to be valuable for them. What do they want?

You want to work backwards from what results options are and then write the questions that would get a user to each of the results. And you want the questions to be useful for the quiz takers and you want it to be useful for you.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Are you making these major copywriting mistakes—and how can you fix them?
  • What’s the #1 copywriting project that can make a difference in your business?
  • Is your brand voice speaking loud enough? Find out!

And those are just the tip of the iceberg.

Whatever you choose to focus your quiz on, ensure your potential client understands the major outcome they’ll receive if they take (and complete!) the quiz. For example, “You’re 10 questions away from getting the #1 copywriting project that can make a difference in your business.”

Best Online Quiz Platform

Our team uses Interact to build all our online quizzes. I’ve personally found it’s the easiest and fastest tool to use—I don’t need a designer or developer to build the quiz.

You can customize your quiz with whatever colors, fonts, and images you want, plus your quiz results can redirect to your own website or a custom landing page.

And, of course, Interact has opt-in forms that seamlessly integrate into your quiz to capture and convert leads. It allows you to automatically segment leads based on quiz results, allowing you to tailor messaging that comes afterwards.

My personal favorite part? Interact has analytics. So, you can always see how your quiz is performing and make data-driven decisions (versus emotional ones!) to improve results. For example, is everyone abandoning the quiz after question 7? You can try 6 questions or even reworking question 7.

But try it out and see how easy it is for yourself. Enter your URL and Interact will build a quiz for you in 1 minute. Try it out here >
