Episode 138: When Copywriting Inspiration Becomes Copywriting Comparison

By Nicki Krawczyk

There are times when copywriting inspiration turns into copywriting comparison, and it can happen quickly before the person consuming that information even knows what is happening. But it’s important to recognize when your information intake makes you feel bad about yourself or your business or your life and pay attention to the triggers.

Nicki and Kate discuss how this has happened to them (it happens to everyone) and the strategies they use to combat those negative comparisons and how keep them from stealing their energy.

A Sneak Peek at the Episode

[2:30] There are times when copywriting inspiration turns into copywriting comparison, and there are negative effects of comparing ones self to other copywriters. It can be a blurred line and easy to slip into comparison.

[3:45] Looking at portfolios of other copywriters can be great and inspirational. You might find ways that you can improve your own portfolio. The things and ways they are posting may also be inspirational and helpful to increase engagement.

[7:30] It can be easy to use social media as a spiral of negativity, often through comparison. This is something that happens to everyone, personally and professionally! Being able to recognize when that is happening is key.

[11:00] When you begin to have unnecessary negative feelings it’s important to look back at what you were doing prior to this flood of feelings so you can recognize the triggers and moving forward, you can take control of your information intake.

[14:25] Social media is not real! You have to remember that people only post the best, and even when they post “real life” shots it is often performative. You are going to see only the best elements of someones life.

[18:40] It’s important to block out the noise in order to move our business forward.

[21:20] When your copywriting inspiration turns into comparison it can knock you off your game for the day. When you are feeling crummy from that comparison it takes away from your work day, you are giving away that energy to strangers on instagram.

[26:45] We are all building different things so you can’t compare where you are in the process to where someone else is. It’s like comparing apples to oranges. And you don’t want to have the same end results as everyone else.

[31:00] Fill your social media feeds with pages and posts that inspire you, that bring you joy, that make you feel good about yourself and your life.

Nicki and Kate, hosts of the Build Your Copywriting Business podcast, sit next to each other on a couch laughing with notebooks in their laps.

“A lot of copywriters speak to other copywriters verses prospective clients and I think that’s where things can get a little hairy in terms of ‘oh do I need to be doing this too? Wait nope, that’s not the audience I’m serving.’ And so always reminding yourself who you’re serving and what the point of what you’re doing is and how it’s going to contribute to your business.”

“We talk a lot about protecting yourself as the business owner and protecting your time and setting up boundaries and I think sometimes we think boundaries with clients, boundaries with family, boundaries with friends. But we also have to have boundaries with ourselves for ourselves.”

“We have to be self-aware enough to notice what is good for us and notice what isn’t good for us and set up those boundaries with ourselves.” – Nicki

“And I know that this does not mean you’re going to stop comparing and I know this does not mean that I am going to stop comparing, however, we’re recording this episode to put these thoughts in your mind, just to plant them in your mind and also to give you something to come back and listen to when that comparison starts to sneak up.” – Nicki

“Especially if you’re having a day, just kind of a down day it can be so easy to use social media to turn that into a spiral of negativity that is very, very hard to get out of. ‘Oh they’re doing this and they’re doing this and they’re so far ahead and I’m never going to get there…’ And I want to say again, this is something that everyone experiences. I experienced this too for whatever reason this week. I started to go down a comparison for myself, my life, my business. I was doing a full trifecta of comparisons without even really realizing it.” – Nicki
