Episode 225: What Jobs Can I Do As a Copywriter?

By Nicki Krawczyk

This episode is brought to you by BetterHelp. Give online therapy a try at betterhelp.com/FRW and get on your way to being your best self.

Let’s get the “duh” out of the way: with copywriting training you can become a copywriter.

But, when you have copywriting skills, there are so many other career and job possibilities.

On today’s episode of the Build Your Copywriting Business podcast, Kate and I are first sharing some of the new-fangled job titles to look out for besides “copywriter.”

But then, the part that I would encourage you to stick around for, we’re talking about all the doors that you open when you learn how to write copy.

Comprehensive Copywriting Academy students prove time and time again that there are unlimited possibilities for copywriters.

  • Carli is a social media manager.
  • Adele is a communications director.
  • Sunny is a marketing strategist.
  • Tyler is an advisor for operations improvement.
  • Alba is a product marketing manager.
  • And Kate herself is our marketing manager in addition to writing copy for her other clients!

A Sneak Peek at the Episode

[01:25] How copywriting can actually open all kinds of different doors to you? It’s nice to know that as your career goes on that, you just have options and we want you to know about all of those options.

[02:09] UX content designer or content designer, used to being called a content strategist. It is someone who plans and strategizes the content and how people are going to experience that content.  This is a role that very clearly copywriting can help you in.

[03:27] As copywriters, we know how to dig into our audience and who we’re writing toward. It’s a very similar experience of exploring. When customers come to a website, how are they navigating this? How can I help guide them through this?

[04:21] Communications specialist or communications manager, It could, depending on the company, incorporate, marketing and copywriting. CCA students, you do have an entire course on writing press releases. We do cover that medium.

[05:30] What is the benefit to the user? Who is going to read this piece of communication? How do I most effectively communicate that so that they get exactly what they need from it? All of the principles of copywriting are going to benefit you in this. That’s going to pair really, really well with anything that you’re doing in the communications field.

[06:06] Content specialist, content writer, and content manager, anything that is focusing on the messaging that is designed to educate, entertain, or inspire. What gaps do we maybe need to fill at each stage of the consumer journey?

[08:02] There might be a little bit digging into not just writing those pieces, but figuring out what those pieces are that need to be written. What are our competitors doing and what content do we need to create to make sure that they’re not going to finding this information that they need on our competitor site versus finding that information on our site.

[08:48] If you want to take a job that also involves content writing. You are especially able to do that well and hit those goals better because you have that strategic thinking skill that you built up as a copywriter.

[10:00] Whether you’re looking for a full time job or freelance, get these alerts. There are ways to pitch yourselves to people who are looking for a full time position as a freelancer. All you have to do, you get the emails, you skim through and if there’s nothing you’re interested in, delete it.

[12:06] Another one to look out for too is a social media writer. What copy is going to go on an image or within a script of the video or within the caption itself on social. There’s so many elements that relate to messaging when it comes to social media.

[13:20] There are CCA students, trained in copywriting, but they have taken their careers in a slightly different direction. Adele, who was the head of communications, social media manager, Carly, marketing strategists, Sunny, and Kate, marketing manager for Filthy Rich Writer.

[16:06]  It just makes you a more marketable professional in whatever field you’re in. But in a nutshell, your copywriting skills open doors. Keep an eye out for those doors and be open to open doors.

Must-Hear Takeaways

As with every episode, we highly encourage you to listen to the entire conversation! But here are a few of the highlights:

“Very certainly, if you have a background in copywriting and you have a really good understanding for strategic writing and how to get people to take an action that you want them to take.” – Nicki

“Just the idea of being able to craft strategic, effective messaging. Messaging that gets people to take action. Messaging that persuades people. Messaging that gets across an idea succinctly and connects with them emotionally. This is valuable in just about any role.” – Nicki

“If a customer is unaware about us, what do they need to know at that stage in the customer journey versus all the way down to when they’re making a purchase?” – Kate

“It’s better to cast a wider net to make sure that you’re not missing any opportunities.” -Nicki

“You move into different titles and different roles and that’s how it goes. If you have the skills to fulfill that role, then yes, put on that title like a proud cape and wear it.” – Kate

“There’s so many possibilities and there’s no reason not to explore them and not to have more skills. Having more skills is never a bad thing, really.” – Kate
