Episode 277: Would You Send a $120K Proposal? She Did. – Victoria’s Story

By Nicki Krawczyk

Talking on the phone feels a little old school, don’t you think? ☎️

But guess what?

It’s still how a lot of business gets done.

And one phone call completely changed the trajectory of Victoria’s career.

Victoria went to school for business and launched her business as a VA in 2021. Her clients? They wanted marketing and copywriting support, too.

As she started building her skills, she realized there was so much more she could be offering—and charging.

She’s sharing how she went from VA to sending a $120,000 proposal for copywriting work

She also came to the podcast PREPARED.

Victoria is giving her top five tips for copywriters—and these are tips that are valuable whether you’re just getting started or you’ve been in the game for years.

I can’t wait for you to hear what she wrote on a sticky note and posted on her laptop!

A Sneak Peek at the Episode

[03:45] I started my career in journalism and public relations, but I eventually felt a pull toward something more strategic and creative, which led me to discover the world of copywriting.

[06:12] When I first found the CCA, I realized I had been “writing” for years, but I hadn’t been “copywriting” with the specific intent and structure needed to drive business results.

[10:30] I decided to stop waiting for the “perfect” job posting and instead started looking for companies I genuinely admired to see how I could help them.

[14:50] I saw a local company that I loved was hiring for a role that wasn’t exactly copywriting, so I decided to pick up the phone and call their office directly to see if I could speak to the hiring manager.

[18:22] “I remember just being so nervous, but I told myself that the worst they could say is no, and that wouldn’t actually change my current situation at all.”

[21:05] To my surprise, the person who answered was incredibly kind, and because I had done my research, I was able to explain exactly how my copywriting skills could solve their specific marketing gaps.

[25:40] That one phone call bypassed a stack of hundreds of resumes and landed me an interview the very next day because they were so impressed by my initiative and my “person-first” approach.

[32:15] After that initial call, I went into the interview not just as an applicant, but as a consultant who had already identified exactly where their messaging was falling short.

[34:50] They weren’t just looking for a writer; they were looking for someone to take the “marketing weight” off their shoulders. The job offer was a validation that my journalism background combined with my new copywriting skills made me a unique asset in the market.

[41:05] “I had to learn to stop saying ‘I think’ and start saying ‘Based on best practices’ or ‘Because this is how the audience consumes information,’ which shifted the entire power dynamic of the room.”

[44:30] Transitioning out of my old role was bittersweet, but I knew that I had outgrown that space and that this new path offered the creative freedom I had been craving for years.

[46:55] Looking back, the biggest hurdle wasn’t the technical skill of writing; it was the mental hurdle of believing that I was “allowed” to reach out directly to a company I liked.

Must-Hear Takeaways

As with every episode, we highly encourage you to listen to the entire conversation! But here are a few of the highlights:

“ It’s a testament to what can happen when we get outside of our comfort zone… It feels a little challenging,  but you consistently have kept doing it…  You sent those pitches, you did the work, you made that phone call… that pivoted almost instantly into a career.” – Nicki

“ You are a proof that you’re planting the seeds, they come to fruition. ” – Kate

“  Know that every single opportunity that has come my way since joining CCA, that’s come from cold pitching essentially.  It came from exactly the CCA pitching framework.” – Victoria

“If you can speak to a client’s specific needs, you aren’t “selling” you are helping.” – Kate
