While in the military, Tyler knew he had a knack for writing and decided to take the first step into a new career. He joined the CCA while still working his full-time job and, through some ups and downs, landed his first clients before leaving the military and landing a full-time job in a strategic communications position.
In this episode, Nicki and Kate talk to Tyler on how he came to build his copy business, how he balances work and being a dad of three, and all the challenges that came with transitioning out of the military and into an entirely different career.

A Sneak Peek at the Episode
[1:40] Nicki and Kate welcome Tyler to the podcast and dig into his military background, including why he decided to pursue copywriting (a major shift from his military role!).
[4:58] Tyler talks about his journey with his military career and his copywriting career. He mentioned how hard it was to balance both his military duties and his dream of becoming a copywriter. It was a bit difficult for him to pick writing up at some times, mostly because of self doubt, but he decided to take the plunge and look into writing copy full-time.
[7:50] Nicki notes how she admires that he came back to writing even after having self doubt. Many people may think that they are the only one that goes through doubt, however at some point everyone feels that and it’s about getting through that.
[9:15] Tyler dives into how personal growth has been such a big thing for him. Reaching out to designers, pitching client … all of these new experiences came to him as something he’s never done before and he’s grown throughout it all. In the military, there’s a rigid system for accomplishing tasks. But copywriting has allowed him to come out of his shell and do things in a new and interesting way.
[11:28] Tyler talks about how he transitioned from teaching in the military to doing freelance work remotely. He goes on to talk about how his full-time job is very copywriting heavy, although it is not a full copywriting position.
[16:07] Diving into his Air Force experience, Tyler talks about how writing during that time helped immensely with writing succinctly and focusing on how to impact people in his current field.
[18:20] Kate asks Tyler about the process of leaving not only the military, but also leaving a secure job to take the leap into the world of copywriting.
[23:11] Tyler talks about how constantly moving around was a big part of why he needed a change for him and his family. He goes on to mention that having a stable situation with the option of working from home and freelancing has affected his life hugely.
[27:40] Tyler offers advice to those who are thinking about going into copywriting. He says to assess what skills you have and translate those skills into ones you may need for copywriting. Another piece of advice he had was being able to reach out for help. There are so many people who are willing to give their advice and help you along your journey, so don’t be afraid to take that step and reach out.
