Before Dori joined the Comprehensive Copywriting Academy, she had a thriving career as a travel journalist. When the coronavirus hit, she decided to pursue copywriting. On this week’s episode, we’re getting a little before/after glimpse at Dori’s career.

[2:00] Nicki shares that Dori is an anomaly in the sense that she’s one of the rare CCA students who has a background in writing. Dori explains her background as a travel journalist and how the coronavirus changed everything for her.
[5:30] Dori shares that she was hesitant about the idea of “advertising.” But if you’re offering real value, then there’s nothing wrong with getting people to understand that. It’s not about being manipulative at all. She also digs into why copywriting is like a puzzle.
[8:00] In fall 2020, Dori had 5 clients and describes some of her wins.
[12:40] Nicki talks about how she follows Dori on LinkedIn and why her LinkedIn strategy is so impressive. Dori shares what she’s doing on the platform and how she’s using it to build her business.
[17:55] Seeing lots of marketing, Dori explains how she felt like a lot of other copywriters made it seem like she had to sell, sell, sell to realize success as a copywriter. But, she explains how she found success by being true to herself.
[21:00] Dori shares she had a lot of preconceptions about copywriting, but trying it was the way for her to discover the facts for herself and realize whether or not it was for her.
[23:00] Flash forward to 2021. Dori mentions things are going really well for her. She worked on brand building and pitching over the winter. She speaks to hitting her momentum and being very busy, but knowing it’s important to continue pitching. Nicki explains that the concept of “failure” is stopping before you breakthrough.
[27:40] The major thing Dori says she discovered is that her clientele is evolving and, with it, the type of copy she is writing. She speaks to the fear of tackling new types of copy and feeling like “can I write this?” each time she’s faced with a new medium. Nicki reminds everyone that the principles of copywriting are the same from project to project.
[33:00] Dori updates everyone on her LinkedIn strategy. Her largest client to date has come through LinkedIn.
[35:45] Dori talks about some of her projects and the ways she’s found those clients. The group talks about all the opportunities for copywriting that we don’t even realize each day.
[45:00] Dori’s plan is to still build her business and not return to an office. One of her cats makes a guest appearance and she describes how she has built up her income month over month.
