Episode 132: Using Copywriting to Build a Second Business—Karen’s Story

By Nicki Krawczyk

On today’s episode, our hosts interview Karen, a Comprehensive Copywriting Academy student, homeschooling mother of children with autism, and a new business owner! They discuss her road to copywriting and what her new career has brought her family.

Karen has found incredible success as a copywriter and credits it to the CCA. She is now starting her own business while working part-time as a copywriter. The best part? She was able to semi-retire her husband from his six-figure job!

A Sneak Peek at the Episode

[2:40] Karen had never heard about copywriting before seeing a Facebook Ad about the CCA and realized that it was what she wanted to do next in her life!

[4:50] In addition to working as copywriter Karen has a full schedule, including homeschooling her two children who are living with autism.

[6:45] While she initially had a lot of concerns about balancing building her business, working as a copywriter and caring for her children, Karen has been able to semi-retire her husband from his full time job and he has stepped into many of those roles she was previously juggling.

[11:30] Karen’s day starts at 6am and she starts her day with a walk on her treadmill and a video or a book for professional development.

[13:20] Karen is working 20-25 hours a week as a copywriter and is projecting to make over six figures in 2023. She has found that email marketing is her specialty and something she is good at, and she’s used that skill to really build her business.

[17:20] She is now working to build her own business, helping parents of children with autism care for themselves as caregivers and manage stress.

Must-Hear Takeaways

As with every episode, we highly encourage you to listen to the entire conversation! But here are a few of the highlights:

Headshot of Comprehensive Copywriting Academy student, Karen Kossow.

“It still tickles me—I get so excited—people give me money because I give them words. The concept that I could earn an amazing living writing was so motivating for me.” – Karen

“I spent 10 years in the restaurant industry—waitress, bartender. And then I moved on to working for a construction company as an office manager. And then … went to massage school. I did that for several years. Unfortunately … I had to close that down … But I got bored. I don’t like to be bored in case you can’t tell, so I started a handmade soap business when my daughter was about six months old. I did that for about two years until we really started getting all of the kids’ diagnoses and having to start therapies. I would consider my early parenting years to also be a full-time job. Doing anywhere from 20 to 30 appointments a week for all the support [my kids] needed … my copy business was a break!” – Karen

“It’s not possible to be all the things for everyone, you deserve time for yourself!” – Karen
