Episode 237: AI is Going to Take My Job!!! … But Is It

By Nicki Krawczyk

Ready for the truth about AI and copywriting?

AI is shifting the way everyone does work. Including copywriters.

YAWN! Boring. 🥱

Yup. That’s a headline that doesn’t get clicks.

“AI is destroying these 5 industries” does get clicks.

On this episode of the Build Your Copywriting Business podcast, Kate and I are having a conversation about how technology, marketing, and the world have always shifted (even since we started our careers!) and will continue to shift.

The key to future-proofing your career is staying on top of these shifts as these come.

AI is simply another one of these shifts.

What we’ve seen from actually using these tools and working with clients? AI is making it more efficient for us to do certain tasks in our jobs.

That means there will be more work for copywriters as clients realize we can move through projects a bit faster.

Businesses have a never-ending to-do list of projects. It’s not like you will get through your copy projects and suddenly there are no more projects.

And if that does happen? That’s probably a good indicator for you to re-pitch your clients 😉

A Sneak Peek at the Episode

[02:05] There’s just so much chaos, so much clickbait. Everybody panic, everybody freak out. They’re trying to get you to take action. AI is shifting the way people work.

[05:04] There was an article in the Washington Post that came out. It was very much like AI is going to take a copywriters career. When you actually dig into it and read the information, it was a totally different story. No matter who you are and what you’re going through, losing your job sucks.

[07:51] A strong foundation can take you a long way in your career. But if you do not continue to stay on top of what is going on in the world. 10 years down the road and maybe you have lost your job at that point.

[10:36] The shifting landscape, yes, copywriters are going to lose their jobs if they’re not doing all of the things that they should be doing. That’s anyone or any profession.

[14:27] If you interact with headlines that are more fear and panic based, it’s going to give you more fear and panic based headlines. What you are seeing on the internet is not the totality of the world. Take a break for even a couple of days. It feels a lot better.

[15:37] The way that you feel about your career and your career prospect is being affected by what content you are being given, it is all part of the process or it is all part of the landscape. Careers are always changing and always evolving. And as professionals, part of our jobs is to keep up with that.

[17:37] There’s still plenty of work for content writers, but you have to differentiate yourself from what is AI going to spew out? How can we stand out from everything else that already exists?

[21:05] Another way of looking at this; There are always new elements being developed; new things to write; new ways to write, and new tools. But yes, I had to stay on top of it. But it also was so interesting. It kept my job interesting and it kept my job fun.

[27:06] I work with one client who has a no-AI policy. And then there are people who have grown up in a digital era. They want things that can help speed business along. Will it look the same? No, but like we said, with everything in this shifting landscape, no job ever looks the same.

[28:10] Do the businesses that have a firm, no-AI policy start to loosen that a little bit because they might be left behind? Just like the people who are not learning new technology are going to be left behind. But I am willing to bet that copywriting has been around since BC times. I have no doubt it will survive.

[33:03] What are you doing to find clients? CCA students know that we have a system for finding clients. Most freelancers do not. Most freelancers are throwing stuff at a wall to see what sticks, and it’s never been a good way to make a living.

[38:14] Give your brain a break, give your emotions a break, give your nervous system a break. Sometimes It’s good to have nothing playing, just enjoy silence for a little bit.

[41:56] A lot of those evolutions will work to your benefit as long as you stay aware of them. You stay on top of them. As part of our commitment to our students and to you listeners is to help you stay on top of them.

Must-Hear Takeaways

As with every episode, we highly encourage you to listen to the entire conversation! But here are a few of the highlights:

“Technology is always shifting, evolving. If we’re not evolving our skills with it, there’s going to be a big gap if we get into a role, whether it’s copywriting or otherwise.” – Kate

“What’s going to set anyone apart from their counterparts is that ability to continue to look for ways to improve, to add value to their clients.” – Kate

“Every career develops, right? And it is not just copywriters. We are not the only career that is facing changes.” – Nicki

“Why we have released our AI for copywriters courses, so that you can use it as a tool.” – Nicki

“It’s easy to get comfortable. But everything’s going to keep changing no matter what. If there’s one truth in life and with our work is that nothing is certain.” – Kate

“Avoid giving yourself unnecessary angst, just be really careful before you make that leap.” – Nicki

“Even if it’s on a journalistic website, headlines are not straight facts anymore. ” – Nicki
