Episode 255: How to Write Scroll-Stopping Social Media Bios and Posts

By Nicki Krawczyk

If you’re going to spend time on social media, my friend, make it count.

As you’ve liiiiikely experienced, social media is a major time suck by design.

No one is immune.

One minute I’m looking at a business owner’s account for tips on hiring, and the next thing I know it’s been 30 minutes and I’ve watched:

👰‍♀️ Wedding highlights from a couple I don’t know
🎂 “Which one is cake?” video with onions and garlic cloves
🎨 And a video of an artist turning old doilies into pottery (that video was actually really cool)

Social media can be an even bigger time suck if you’re on there to find clients … but going about it the wrong way.

First, as you’ve probably heard us say, you do not need to be on social media to have a thriving copywriting career. If that’s you, then skip this episode and keep scrolling down for a different episode to watch.

(Yes, I fully realize that’s going to hurt this episode’s numbers, but hey! I’d rather be honest than have you waste time on something you don’t need.)

But, if you like social media and want to attract clients—not just likes—then this week’s episode of the Build Your Copywriting Business podcast is for you.

Kate and I are covering a lot of ground, including:

  • The biggest mistakes copywriters make in their bios
  • How to use social strategically—not aimlessly
  • Why clarity always beats cleverness
  • What makes your perspective the most valuable content you can share

A Sneak Peek at the Episode

[02:00] Tips about how to actually make the most of these bios since they’re important. If someone is interested in you, the first thing they’re going to read is that bio. Who are you? What do you do? Why does it matter? Why are you different than anyone else?

[02:59] If you’re doing it in the right ways and you’re being genuine to what it is that you do and who you serve. Start with the basics and then add layer on the personality on top.

[03:28] One of the mistakes that people make is they make their bios about them. When the right person who is a potential client is coming over to your bio. Like your professional profile, we have to curate them and we have to be deliberate about them so that it is useful too.

[06:50] If your clients are searching you and you do have a personal presence on any of the social platforms and you don’t want your clients to see it because it is personal, then just make it private.

[08:31] One of the mistakes that people make is cleverness at the expense of clarity. Just get clear on who is your target audience, what are you trying to convey? What is the desired end goal? Treat it with the same strategic mind that you would treat a client’s social profile.

[12:00] What are people searching for? They’re searching for a copywriter or someone to help with messaging. And so making sure. Those words are in there again. what are you offering, what do you, what are you delivering to your clients? Start there.

[15:00] What is the purpose of the post that you are writing? We don’t just put up posts for the sake of putting up posts. What is the purpose behind it? Is it a more content oriented post where you’re looking to educate, to entertain, or to inspire, and any of those three and a combination.

[16:38] We always talk about setting time limits on yourself. You better be measuring the impact of the time that you are investing in it. How much time are you spending and what level of return are you getting with clients reaching out to you?

[18:00] No matter what you’re doing, you want a good mix of calls to actions. You don’t want every call to action, asking people to do a lot of work. You don’t want all of it to do something that requires people to take multiple extra steps. For the time being while you’re building an audience, you can probably do manually comment and then you can start a conversation there.

[19:31] You have to catch them with an initial hook. People are scrolling through, and with any luck, one of the algorithms will show your content and you want to catch their attention and get them to interact with it.

[21:27] Two things to think about. One, you have your own unique take. what have you learned so far and what are your thoughts on it? And put it out there because number two. Worst thing that can happen is no one sees it, especially when you’re just starting out.

[22:00] What is your unique take compared to everyone else? The ideas and inspiration will come from you, not necessarily your consumption of content on the internet. Make what you are posting valuable.

[25:06]  No matter what you’re writing, take a look at what you’ve created. Is there a way to break that into two pieces? three pieces or four pieces? Make your content stronger so that it’s very focused on one single idea and not trying to pack five ideas.

[27:11] If you want to be on social. Let’s lean into technology. Write a prompt. I am a copywriter. And I want to post more on social media. Tell it which platform, and say, can you give me topics that I could talk about?

[28:40] When it comes to social media, what story do I have? What experience do I have that happened to me, that happened in my life that I saw, that I consumed, that I worked with a client and this happened because other copywriter can’t come up with that. That is your story and experience.

[30:00] Social Media is a dotted line to clients. It’s not a straight line. It’s not a direct pipeline to clients. It can be something that helps you, but it’s not necessarily a guarantee.

Must-Hear Takeaways

As with every episode, we highly encourage you to listen to the entire conversation! But here are a few of the highlights:

Nicki Krawczyk, founder of the Comprehensive Copywriting Academy, looks over a balcony in Boston, notebook and pen in hand.

“If somebody comes to your profile, you want them to immediately know that you are a copywriter.” – Nicki

“Social media, while it’s not necessarily not direct outreach, it’s still client facing, it’s still external facing. So, you want it to be value driven.” – Kate

“Followers are great, but more than ever, all of the platforms have gone from being follower based to interest based.” – Nicki

“You have to hook their attention if you want any chance of them interacting with you more.” – Nicki

“Keep in mind what is useful for your audience. You can use technology to give you some ideas for things to talk about.” – Nicki

“Draw on your personal experiences to add in the details and to create the content within whatever that topic you’ve brainstormed.” – Kate

“If you’re gonna do it, do it well and do it strategically.” – Nicki
